Smith Senior Named Gates Millennium Finalist

Congratulations to Newman Smith senior JJ Echaniz for being selected a Gates Millennium Scholars Program Finalists for 2012. For the 4th consecutive year, a Newman Smith senior has been selected as a finalists and winner in this prestigious scholarship awards program.


The Gates Millennium Scholars Program, founded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, annually select 1,000 talented students to receive a good-through-graduation scholarship to use at any college or university of their choice. Gates Millennium Scholars receive full tuition, room, board, books, expenses, etc., from the baccalaureate through doctorate degree levels.

Since 2008, a NSHS senior has been selected as a GMS Scholarship winner. Recent winners (GMS Scholars) have been Celeste Russell, Rani Hadley, and Lance Banks.

Additionally, JJ is a finalists for the $20,000 COCA-COLA Scholarship for 2012, via the Coca-Cola Scholars Program.
