R. L. Turner Percussion Wins Top Award and Other Accolades

At the 20th Annual Plano Drum Line Competition, the R. L. Turner Drumline took 1st in the A Standstill Division I show. Congratulations!

R. L. Turner Students “Change” their World: Local high school students donate change to support students affected by wildfires

Students at R. L. Turner High School are launching a campaign called Project Jefferson to raise money for students affected by the wildfires in Jefferson ISD.

From Monday, Oct. 3 to Tuesday, Nov. 1, several student organizations including NHS, METSA, HOSA, AMAT, & Student Council at R. L. Turner have joined together to collect change which will be used to purchase gift cards for the students in Jefferson ISD. 

Students at R. L. Turner live the C-FB ISD character values of pride, cooperation, responsibility, respect, integrity, service, and citizenship. Character counts at R. L. Turner and Project Jefferson allows students the opportunity to give back. 

Smith Percussion Wins Top Award

The Smith Percussion section took second place in the AA Stand Still division with their fall contest show entitled "Sketches of the Orient" at the 20th Annual Plano Drum Line Competition. Smith Percussion also received the D6 award, sponsored by the Drop6 Publishing company, given to the top performing group of the day for "Outstanding Arrangement and Musical Interpretation." Smith was unanimously awarded the D6 trophy by the judging panel placing Smith atop the 54 schools that performed on Saturday.

Creekview Speech Team Wins Big

Over the weekend the Creekview Speech Team competed at the Newman Smith Speech and Debate Tournament.  Out of the 36 schools in attendance, Creekview placed 1st.  Mitchell Ferguson was the top overall competitor.

District Band Exhibition: It's The Place To Be

On Tues., Sept 27, beginning at 6:30 p.m. the four Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD high school bands will perform their UIL Shows for the public at Standridge Stadium, 1330 W. Valwood Parkway, Carrollton. There is no admission fee and everyone is welcome. The bands performing are: 
  •  Ranchview High School Band - 6:30  p.m. (Director Chuck Moon, Assistant Galen Cook)
  •  R. L. Turner High School Band - 7:05 p.m. (Director: Angela Caviness, Assistants: Jesse Showalter, Paul Ailey)
  •  Creekview High School Band - 7:40 p.m. (Director: Preston Hazzard, Assistants: Michael Jordan, Andrew Anker
  •  Newman Smith High School Band - 8:15 p.m. (Director: Andy Rein, Assistants: Rob Parks, Trevor Kay)
 You will learn firsthand why our district has been named one of the Best Communities for Music Education in the nation five times if you spend Tuesday evening listening to these four these outstanding band.
It will be a fabulous evening of great music!  Come out and support the C-FB ISD Marching Bands.

Remember -- Standridge Stadium is the place to be on Tues., Sept. 27 at 6:30 p.m.!

Freeman Elementary Remembers 9/11

On Monday, Sep. 12, students, parents & staff at Freeman Elementary commemorated the events of Sept. 11, 2001 by making 3,051 U.S. Flags. Each flag represents a child who lost a parent on that day.

The flags were placed on the hill behind the school in the outline of the World Trade Center towers.

First Graders at Stark Learn to Care for Their Fantastic Teeth

On Sep. 6, first grade students at Stark Elementary learned about the importance of proper brushing and flossing of their teeth. The Farmers Branch Masonic Lodge #395, Crest, Colgate, and Family Services of Texas helped to sponsor the event, providing Fantastic Teeth Fan Club bags for each student who attended.

Dave Blair, former Mayor of Farmers Branch, was in attendance.

Creekview Speech Team Wins Third Sweepstakes Award

The Creekview Speech team competed at the Grand Prairie High School Spotlight Speech and Debate Tournament. Out of 33 schools competing at the tournament, Creekview placed first.

Senior Kevin King was named "Top Competitor" at the tournament out of the over 380 students competing.

District Announces Early Release Times for Exams and Staff Development

The Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD announces schedules for early release times for staff development and exams for 2011-2012. 

The early release days for staff development are October 5, 2011 and February 8, 2012.  The early release schedule for staff development days is as follows:

  • Elementary Schools release at 10:40 a.m.
  • High Schools release at 11:20 a.m.
  • Middle Schools release at 12 noon
  • Mary Grimes will release at 12:45 p.m.
  • Bea Salazar will release at 10:35 a.m.
  • Early College High School will not release students early on these days.

The early release days for exams are December 15 and December 16, 2011 and
May 30 and 31, 2012.  The early release schedule for exams is as follows:

  • High Schools release at 11:30 a.m.
  • Middle Schools release at 12:10 p.m.
  • Elementary Schools release at 1 p.m.
  • Bea Salazar will release at 10:35 a.m.
  • Mary Grimes and Early College High School will not release students early on these days.

Buses for the schools will run according to the early release schedule.

Dr. Bobby Burns, Superintendent of Schools, said, "I am proud of these students and their accomplishments.  They have achieved this honor through hard work and excellence in the classroom.”

The students are among 16,000 high school seniors who will continue in the National Merit Scholarship Corporation's competition for 8,300 merit scholarship awards worth $34 million that will be offered in the spring, according to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation press release.
Students are selected based on performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. National Merit Scholarship Corporation reports that the pool of semifinalists represents less than one percent of the top high school seniors in the nation.

Approximately 15,000 semifinalists become finalists.  From the group of finalists, Merit Scholarship winners are determined according to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.  “Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies,” according to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation press release.

Creekview Takes Second Win of Speech and Debate Season

The Creekview Speech Team competed at the 23rd Annual Grapevine Classic Speech and Debate Tournament. With 78 schools from 14 states in attendance, Creekview placed first.

RLT Celebrates AP Grant

On Sep. 12, R. L. Turner held their 2011-2012 AP Grant Kick-off by encouraging students to take AP classes. LBJ Express presented the school with a check for $502,250. Some of the funds will be used as $100 incentives to students that score 3, 4 or 5 of their AP exams.

2003 Bond Referendum - Good Elementary Construction, Sept. 2011

Construction continues at Good Elementary. Construction crews pour and smooth cement that will be the floor for the cafeteria and gym of the new campus being built behind the existing campus.

C-FB ISD Celebrates Grandparents' Day

On Sep. 9, McCoy Elementary celebrated Grandparents' Day by inviting parents and grandparents join their students for lunch in the cafeteria.



Thompson Elementary celebrated Grandparents' Day on Friday, September 9, 2011 during the students' lunch times. Mrs. Doak welcomed over 100 guests and PTA handed out information about the school and PTA. A fun time was had by all.

WATCH D.O.G.S. at Rosemeade Elementary

At Rosemeade Elementary, dads are starting a national program called Watch D.O.G.S. in order to get parents, particularly dads more involved. Sept. 7 was the kick-off. This is the first WATCH D.O.G.S. program in C-FB ISD. More info at bit.ly/qH2JO7
