This section is available for prospective families and future C-FB ISD team members to hear from "real C-FBers" on what makes our district special. This is a perfect time of year for you to stop and reflect on why the Carrollton-Farmers Branch School District has a special place in your heart. During the holidays, we are asking you to take time to submit tributes to our special website section.

Here are a few questions to jump start your thinking.

  • Are there specific people or schools that you wish to remember? If so, how did they impact your family?

Review of Inclement Weather Procedures

How to find out if schools are closed
Cold weather has finally arrived, bringing with it the chance of icy roads and conditions. If those conditions make it necessary for C-FB ISD schools to be delayed or closed for the safety of students and staff, the district has procedures in place.

If schools are delayed or closed due to inclement weather:
• Families and staff will be notified through the district's mass notification message system called Blackboard Connect.
• A Special Alert email newsletter will be sent to subscribers advising them of the decision.
• An announcement will be posted on the district's website, www.cfbisd.edu, as soon as the decision has been made.
• We will post messages on our Twitter feed and blog.
C-FB ISD families and residents are advised to listen to local radio or television stations for updated weather reports.

Local media outlets also post information on their websites, so families and other residents may want to check those sites for the latest weather information.

2011-2012 Proposed Academic Calendar Input

We are asking your thoughts about the 2011-12 C-FB ISD proposed Academic Calendar. Designing an academic calendar for a school district is a complex issue; however, in Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD, we want to keep student achievement in the forefront when making decisions.

The proposed academic calendar is very similar to this year’s calendar in terms of the following:

· The same basic holiday schedule including Thanksgiving and Winter Break

· Ending 1st semester before the Winter Break

Below is some information that you may need to know before you review the calendar about some parameters that the district faces when setting an academic calendar.

Exactly what did the Texas Legislature change regarding the start of the school year?
The Legislature changed Texas Education Code 25.0811 to read that public school districts cannot begin school before the fourth Monday in August. The only exception is if the district or school operates a year-round system under Section 25.084. This change started with the 2007-08 school year.

How many days must children attend school?
Texas currently requires that the public school year contain 180 days for students; however, districts may obtain waivers for up to five fewer student attendance days for professional development purposes.

The 2011-12 school calendar proposal includes 177 days for students, and the district will ask for a waiver for three student days for professional development time for staff. These days are Oct. 10, Nov. 21, 22.

What about early release days?
Under the expedited waiver system, a school district may apply for six early release days. These days are allowable through Texas Education Code 25.082. The current calendar proposal has four early release days already scheduled (two days at the end of each semester). The district is recommending to the District Improvement Council that that all six be approved and that the additional two days be used as staff development early release days as in the 2010-2011 calendar; however, the specific days will be determined later.

Barbara Bush and Ranchview Receive IB Authorization Giving C-FB an Elite Distinction

The Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District (C-FB ISD) is proud to announce that Barbara Bush Middle School and Ranchview High School have received authorization through the International Baccalaureate Organization (IB) as a Middle Years Programme school. C-FB ISD, now, is one of the 146 elite districts and schools in the world that offer an IB continuum from kindergarten through twelfth grade. There are only 17 schools in North America that can claim this special distinction. C-FB ISD is the second public school district in North Texas to offer the IB continuum through all grades.

In C-FB ISD, we offer a Primary Years Programme for elementary students in kindergarten through fifth grades at Las Colinas Elementary and Good Elementary. The Middle Years Programme serves students at Barbara Bush Middle School and Ranchview High School in grades six through ten. At Ranchview High School, we offer a Diploma Program for high school students in grades 11 and 12.

The Middle Years Programme

Over the last three years, Barbara Bush Middle School and Ranchview High School have traveled a journey to become part of the International Baccalaureate community. Although, the Middle Years Programme is in its infancy at Barbara Bush and Ranchview High School, IB is already having an important impact on the campuses. Students are showing a willingness to participate in community service as they begin to view their school as a community and not just a place to complete schoolwork.

Mavon Wall, IB coordinator at Barbara Bush explains, “The staffs at Barbara Bush and Ranchview are using IB to help students become well rounded, confident, independent, life-long learners with the awareness that other cultures are part of their lives and differences only mean a better understanding of their place in the world. In an increasingly global marketplace, the internationally minded can have the edge. These students develop problem solving and critical thinking skills that help them be part of a world community which believes in understanding through education.”

The IB program curriculum itself is no different than any other in C-FB ISD. All schools must teach the required state mandated essential knowledge and skills. What sets apart the Middle Years Programme is the philosophy and the framework of presenting the curriculum. As Ms. Wall explains, “Teachers utilize active learner-centered approaches which focus on questioning, critical thinking and problem solving to involve learners so they can better understand curriculum.”

The Middle Years Programme also includes:
• Problem and project based learning is used to promote understanding.
• Collaborative and cooperative learning helps students achieve a common academic goal.
• All students participate in a second language, sustained and continuous over the five years of the program.
• Students complete a minimum of 50 hours in a technology which promotes the design cycle.

For more information about IB programs, visit www.ibo.org.

Our fair is unique in that the students actually get to interact with our volunteers on an individual basis. The intent is for students to identify potential careers of interest and to continue to achieve academically in order to meet their career goals."

Shoe and Sock Drive for Haiti

Middle school coaches in C-FB ISD are being innovative in an effort to raise donations for the children of Haiti. The coaches went barefoot on Feb. 1 and 2 to encourage students, families and community members to donate items towards a shoe and sock drive. Eric Costa, athletic coordinator at Barbara Bush Middle School, is organizing the drive for all the middle schools. Donations of new shoes and socks in any size can be dropped off at any C-FB ISD middle school.

The new shoes and socks are being collected for Samaritan's Feet during February to be shipped to Haiti. Donors can also contribute $5 by texting SHOES to 85944 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. That will help buy a pair of shoes for a child in Haiti by adding a one-time charge of $5 to your phone bill.
