Newman Smith Debate Wins UIL Regional Tournament for Second Consecutive Year

Congratulations to the Newman Smith Trojan Debate team. The UIL 4A Region 2 tournament was held on April 21 at the University of North Texas and NSHS Debate won the Region Championship for the second straight year. NSHS Debate is sending four students to the UIL state championship tournament to be held at the University of Texas in May.



Individual results are as follows:

• 1st place Lincoln Douglas Debate: Sarah Grace Withers. She is the Region Champion in this event for the 2nd year in a row. Sarah Grace also placed 4th in Informative Speaking. 
• 2nd Place Persuasive Speaking: Tanya Rajan. Tanya has qualified for UIL state all 4 years in high school. 
• 3rd Place Persuasive Speaking: Michael Schrag. Michael has qualified for UIL state 3 of his 4 years in high school. 
• 3rd place Informative Speaking: Diana Pop. This is Diana’s 2nd year in a row to go to State. 

Only 12 students in the state qualify in each event.
