NSHS Student Wins the 2013 Congressional Arts Competition

A Newman Smith High school student has won the 2013 Congressional Arts Competition sponsored by U.S. Representative Kenny Marchant. Phuoung Nguyen, a junior at Smith, won the competition recently by presenting an original works of art (landscape) to a panel of judges.

Art students from throughout North Texas competed for the opportunity to display their talent at the U.S. Capital Building. Phuoung Nguyen has been invited to visit Washington, D.C. by Congressman Marchant. Her winning landscape will be on display at the U.S. Capital for a year. Additionally, Nguyen will receive a scholarship from Savannah College of Art and Design, one of the top art schools in the United States.

Nguyen’s art teacher at Newman Smith is Mary Kay Cavin.
