Middle School Language Arts Director to Receive Award at Texas Conference

Middle School Language Arts Director, Dr. Shirley Wright, will be awarded the Mercedes Bonner Leadership Award at the Texas Council of Teachers of Language Arts (TCTELA) Conference in Dallas. The award, established in 2011, honors Mercedes Bonner who served for more than a decade as chairperson of the Multicultural Awareness Committee of TCTELA until her death in 2008.

Erica Ysbrand, Director of High School Language Arts and Languages Other than English, stated, “There is perhaps no one more qualified for the Mercedes Bonner Leadership Award than Dr. Shirley Wright. She has served for decades in Texas as a leader in her classroom, a leader for district-level teachers, a leader at the state level, and a leader in the national arena. She speaks softly but with great wisdom. She speaks wisely with volume that breaks intellectual barriers.”
