R. L. Turner student Joon Choi has been awarded the 2012 Verizon Community Leader Award. Joon is one of 10 recipients chosen from 200 nominees for this award.
In the fall, Joon will be profiled on the NBC 5 “Inside High School Football” program aired on Saturdays at 12:00 pm. Recipients are chosen based on their activities at school, in the community, and how they exhibit Verizon’s core values—integrity, respect, performance excellence, and accountability.
Verizon will donate $1000.00 in the Joon Choi’s name to the RLT Band.

“Big Books by George”
Congratulations to Blalack Middle School teachers Claire McLoughlin and Carolyn Lane for their innovative teacher grant, “Big Books by George,” which was funded by the C-FB ISD Educational Foundation in 2012.
Big Books will be utilized by the teachers to instruct, assess and modify curriculum based on the individual needs of each student. Each lesson plan promotes concept development and student involvement while supporting listening, writing, speaking and researched responses. This project will allow hands on experience while learning math, science, social studies and comprehension.

This 4 minute documentary tells the story of Annie Heads Rainwater, a civil rights advocate who helped to integrate the schools in Carrollton. Annie Heads Rainwater Elementary is named in her honor.

Ranchview Volleyball Player Signs With Richland College 2012
On May 23, RHS Senior, Makenzie Francis, signed her letter of intent to play volleyball with Richland College. Francis maintained an average of 3.74 in all of her classes over 4 years, making her "easy to recruit," according to Coach Smith, who explained to students in attendance the importance of academics and the pursuit of college.

On May 23, Good Elementary hosted a “Sneak Peak” of their new campus, which will open in the Fall of 2012. The construction was paid for through a 2003 Bond Referendum.

Town North Bank Presents $28,000 in College Scholarships to Seven C-FB ISD Graduating Seniors
Town North Bank, located in Dallas, hit $359,000 in scholarships and 113 scholarship recipients after giving away the bank’s 2012 scholarships. Seven Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District (C-FB ISD) seniors received $4,000 each. They are Christian Rafael Covarrubias and Soledad Diaz, R. L. Turner; Raquel Rodriguez and Jalicia Chenne` Smith, Newman Smith; Treslyn Larae Holden and Allison Nicole Price, Creekview; Daniela Jocabed Ortiz, Ranchview.
Smith Hosts Successful Book Swap
Newman Smith held its 1st annual “Book Swap” for students. The “Book Swap” was organized by English Teacher Amanda Leader. In two days, students exchanged 3,045 books. This effort was in additional to the campus' “Silent Sustained Reading Program” through the school Library where students checked out 30,202 books this year as compared to 11,543 books the previous year.
Smith Debate Places at State UIL Tournament
The Newman Smith Debate team competed at the UIL State Championship Tournament on May 21 and 22 at the University of Texas. Four NSHS students were qualified for the tournament and all four placed in the top ten in the state of Texas.

Turner Teacher Named 2012 Texas History Teacher of the Year
R. L. Turner teacher Robyn Elliott was the 2012 Texas History Teacher of the Year. The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, HISTORY®, and Preserve America are honored to celebrate the outstanding work that Robyn does in the classroom. A panel of teachers, administrators, and academics from your state selected Robyn for her use of primary documents in the classroom, the level of inspiration that she provides to students and her career achievements in education.

Blalack Middle School Earns Jostens National Yearbook Designs Recognition
The 2010-2011 Bear Tracks yearbook has been recognized for excellence as the best-of-the-best in design and creation and is featured in the 2012 Jostens Look Book. The Look Book is a collection of spreads and photos from outstanding yearbooks and their creative themes, cool covers, dazzling designs and photography. Along with design excellence, the annually published Look Book honors the important role well-crafted yearbooks play in helping school chronicle the experiences, stories and achievements most relevant to student and their academic year.

The Turner FastTrack RC Lions/METSA team competed at the 2011-2012 NASCAR Student Racing Challenge competition on Saturday, May 19 in Kinnapolis, NC and placed first in six events.

Lady Wolves Win State Championship in Track and Field
The Lady Wolves Track & Field team competed at the Texas High School State Track & Field Championships in Austin, TX. The Lady Wolves placed seventh overall out of 46 teams with a total of 24 points. Senior Michaela Williams placed fourth in the Triple Jump, sophomore Jasmine Frazier placed sixth in the 100 meter hurdles, junior Antonisha Stewart placed seventh in the 100 meter hurdles, and the 4 x 100 m relay composed of junior Shyandrea Jackson, junior Antonisha Stewart, senior Janay Grant, and junior T'ara Howard placed first.

Turner Students Win Civic Participation Competition
A team of students from R. L. Turner attended the Annette Strauss School of Government sponsored Civic Participation Speak Up! Speak Out! competition. The team researched a student-chosen community problem, developed a proposal, and then defended that proposal before community judges at UTD in Richardson. The team identified the problem of cheating. The team was awarded first place and received $300 to begin implementation of the proposal. Team members are sophomores Noemi Rosales, Valerie Fix, Karina Zuniga and freshman Michelle Park.
Davis Students Host iPad Showcase
On May 1 at Davis Elementary, bilingual second grade students hosted an iPad showcase. School Board members, district administrators and staff listened to the student's presentations. The campus received some of the iPads from a grant form the Educational Foundation.

"THE EVENT" 2012 - Employee & Volunteer Appreciation Day
On May 4, over 3,000 faculty, staff, volunteers & their families visited the Old Downtown Carrollton Square for "THE EVENT," an appreciation day with free ice cream, chair massages, vendor booths, petting zoo, bounce house, face painting and more. The event was paid for by local businesses. Thanks to everyone who made the event a huge success!

On May 4, students at Good Elementary presented their IB presentations to classrooms on topics ranging from the American Revolution to Greek Mythology.
Perry Middle School Hosts "Because We Care Fair"
On May 3, Perry Middle School hosted the "Because We Care Fair" in the library. Students represented various causes ranging from the environment to human trafficking. Students visiting the fair could buy tickets, depositing a ticket into a collection booth of the cause they wanted their money to support.

C-FB Girls' Track and Field Athletes Win Six Gold Medals at State Meet
C-FB Girls' Track participants won an amazing six gold medals at the UIL 4-A State Track and Field Meet held in Austin. Melissa Gonzales of Creekview won gold medals in both the 100m hurdles (13.92) and the 300m hurdles (41.65). Courtney Okolo of Newman Smith is the repeat state champion in the 400m run and in doing so she set both a 4-A and and overall state record time of 52.40. Courtney added a second individual gold medal in the 200m dash (23.87).
The Ranchview girls' 4 X 100 relay won the gold medal in the 3A division of the UIL State Track and Field Meet. In a very exciting race, they won with a time of 47.45 over second and third who finished in 47.73 and 47.75 respectively. Shyandrea Jackson, Janay Grant, Antonish Stewart, and T'Ara Howard are the members of the 4 X 100 relay for Ranchview.
And the Newman Smith 4 X 400 relay team repeated as state champions with a time of 3:47.11 just edging out Lancaster who had beaten Newman Smith at regionals. Members of the relay team are Adriana DeLaRue, Mia James, Timeka Sandifer, and Courtney Okolo.

RHS Chapter of Becca’s Closet Provides Formal Wear to Needy Teens
After collecting over 300 articles of formal clothing, the Ranchview High School chapter of Becca’s Closet opened up for the prom season throughout March and April. On Mar. 31, Apr. 21, and Apr. 28, the chapter gave out close to 50 articles of formal wear to students throughout Dallas. The dresses and suits were all given out for free to the students to help make their proms more affordable. The RHS chapter has been collecting donations since March 2011 under founder Hena Rafiq and sponsor Elizabeth Mahaffey. Students looking to get free formal wear for future formal dances, or students wanting to donate old dresses and suits can visit www.beccascloset.org for more information.

Students at DeWitt Perry Middle School completed reading The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein, in early May. Upon completion of reading, each student wrote a message of thanks or appreciation to a teacher, creating their own “Giving Tree.”

On May 4, Thompson Elementary held it’s annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration with traditional food, music, dancing, face painting and bounce house. Special guests included C-FB ISD Ballet Folkloric.
RHS Students Learn Dangers of DWI and Texting While Driving
To help prepare Ranchview students for their prom on May 5, Liberty Mutual of Irving sponsored the Prom Crash Car Event May 3-4. A wrecked car was on display in front of the campus, along with photos of teens who were killed as a result of drunk drivers. Juniors and Seniors received a parent letter explaining the event and a parent-teen driving contract during their advisory classes. Liberty Mutual representative, Lillian Muniz, talked with students during lunchtime and provided additional information about texting and driving, teen passengers and teen auto fatalities.

Newman Smith High School Debate student, Sarah Grace Withers, has been recognized by the National Forensic League with its highest honor, Premier Distinction.
Withers is the 7th student in the history of Newman Smith to receive this honor and the first student in the history of C-FB ISD to receive this honor while still in the 11th grade. Withers is the 3rd student at NSHS to receive the honor of Premier Distinction this year.

Smith Students Place in Top Ten at International DECA Competition
Newman Smith had 13 students qualify for international competition at the DECA conference. There are over 15,000 students competing from all 50 states, Canada, China, Germany and Guam. The competition was very stiff with anywhere from 100 to 150 competitors in each event.

Kent Cardinals Recycle Bottles for Earth Day
On Apr. 20, the Kent Elementary Student Council conducted a school wide water bottle recycling contest in celebration of Earth Day 2012. The city of Carrollton supplied recycling boxes for the project. Each grade level deposited their empty water bottles in recycling boxes for one week. Over 2,000 water bottles were collected for recycling.
Ranchview Wolves Participate in Green Activities for Earth Week
The Ranchview High School Eco Club celebrated Earth Week by participating in two community recycling events; Apr. 14, the Wolves helped Keep Carrollton Beautiful Recycle unwanted electronics, and on Apr. 21, the Wolves helped the Valley Ranch Homeowners Association recycle household items including electronics, ink jet cartridges, and batteries.
Through the course of Earth Week, Ranchview held a “green-out” event, Dark Activities (using natural ambient light instead of electric light), a green bake sale with proceeds going to Bangladesh to buy water filters, and a campus-wide clean-up. RHS Academic UIL Team Heads to Regional Meet
On Mar. 24, the Ranchview High School Academic UIL Team won its sixth straight District championship at the District 12-3A UIL Spring meet. The students won a combined total of 53 medals, including 20 first place individual medals and 11 first place team medals. The academic contests include multiple competitions in mathematics, science, journalism, literature, speech, social studies and spelling. The team is preparing for the Regional meet at Texas A&M Commerce on Apr. 21.
Four Trojan Debaters Qualify for State
On Apr. 21, the Newman Smith Trojan Debate team competed in the UIL 4A Region 2 Tournament at the University of North Texas. The Trojans won the Region Championship for the second consecutive year. NSHS Debate is sending four students to the UIL state championship tournament to be held at the University of Texas in May.
Creekview Arts and Crafts Fair
This Saturday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. there will be an Arts and Crafts Fair at Creekview High
School. Vendors from around DFW have purchased booths/tables for the event, and
will be selling their items.
There are still some open spots for
vendors on Saturday. If you have a hobby or side business (jewelry, scarves,
nativity sets, pottery, toilet seat covers, fine art), consider purchasing a
table for the fair. Reservations can be made through Thursday. If you have any questions about the event or how to

Softball and Baseball Play-Off Games
Ranchview softball, champion of District 12-3A, had a first round bye. They will play an area round series against Sanger High School beginning this Thursday, May 3, at Frisco Lone Star High School, 2606 Panther Creek Parkway, Frisco. Game 1 will be played at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 3. Game 2 will be played at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, May 4. Game 3, if needed, will be played 30 minutes after the completion of Game 2. Tickets for each game will be $3.00 for adults and $2.00 for students.
