Las Colinas Student Featured on My Fox DFW - Hometown Hero: Fuzzils

From MyFoxDFW:

Clarice Tinsley’s Hometown Hero this week is an 11-year-old Irving girl who created the Fuzzil to raise money for her school library.

What is a Fuzzil? It is a wild and furry pencil topper with plastic eyes that wiggle. And it was the must have item this year at Las Colinas Elementary School.

Fifth grader Zoe Venglarik created the creatures and sold them each for $1 in order to raise money to buy new library books.

Everyone from kindergarteners all the way up to the fifth graders bought them like crazy. At last count, Venglarik had raised $1,034 by selling her pink, white, black, green, brown and even leopard print Fuzzils.

The money should help the library buy 75 to 100 books; that’s a huge gift and a big deal in this time of state school budget cuts.

Venglarik said she got the idea for her venture after taking an international baccalaureate class and learning about the impact of literature on people’s lives. Plus she loves books and wants to pass that love on.

Even though next year she’ll move to a new school and won’t be around to read all the new books, she said countless other children who attend Las Colinas Elementary will for years to come.
