Singing and Dancing - It's Not Just on American Idol
Imagine over 400 students singing and dancing in a daily program intended to help develop the English language and vocabulary. This summer program is Learning the Language in Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD. Learning the Language is being hosted at Central Elementary this year.
Since 1985, Bilingual and ESL students in C-FB have been attending Learning the Language during the summer. The purpose of the program is to develop English through the use of fairy tales, songs and movement.
The Pied Piper visits the students every day for one hour to sing songs that he wrote himself and dance, while developing oral language in kids. Each student receives a CD to keep with all the music they sing to practice at home.
Teachers use fairy tales, poems, and hands-on activities to engage kids in the learning. Kids love coming to school every day during the summer to learn and sing with teachers and the Piper. The program consists predominantly of Pre-K and Kinder students. Students in 1st-5th grades who are new to the country also attend. Older students participate in a puppet show that correlates with the fairy tale they read that week. The program is four weeks long, starting June 10 and ending July 3.
Through singing, dancing, fairy tales and reading, students in C-FB learn at high levels.

Las Colinas Elementary Update: Bigger, Better and a World Map Wall!
In the 2003 bond passed by voters in the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD, money was established to renovate Las Colinas Elementary. Due to the foundation issues in the building, the Board of Trustees and district administration have decided to build a new facility on the existing site.
The new facility will be finished June 1, 2014. Demolition of the existing Las Colinas facility and completion of new site work is slated to be completed by August 15, 2014.
The new facility will be a two-story building with 39 classrooms totaling 89,000 square feet. The campus will also feature larger classrooms and an additional 22,000 square feet of space. This newer and bigger facility will be a showcase featuring a World Map wall. The cafeteria and stage facilities will be enhanced providing ample space for school meals and student performances.
The new facility will be finished June 1, 2014. Demolition of the existing Las Colinas facility and completion of new site work is slated to be completed by August 15, 2014.
We appreciate the patience of parents and community members as we build the students of Las Colinas an outstanding learning-focused facility. Parking and traffic might be impacted during the building process.
Northstar Builders will be using the unused district property near LaVillita Elementary to house construction supplies during the Las Colinas construction process.

Students in Ms. Thomas' class at Rosemeade Elementary took part in the van Gogh Institute for Extraordinary Minds Spring 2013 Art Show. The artists visited 'campuses' where they were taught basic art fundamentals and given a project to complete. Students created paintings, self-portraits, masks and friendship boxes. Students displayed their work as fellow classmates came to visit the show and admire the artwork.
