RLT Student Takes 1st Place at Regional Science and Engineering Fair

R. L. Turner High School student, Michelle Park took First Prize and Grand Prize Runner-Up at the Dallas Regional Science and Engineering Fair with her project, “Little Needles! The Fabrication of Gold Biocompatible Microneedles with Dissolvable Nano-scale Tips for the Treatment and Diagnosis of Malignant Cells.” Park also won Best Engineering Project from the Society of American Military Engineers and Outstanding Project with Air Force Applicability from the United States Air Force. Park will now compete at the State and International Science Fair competitions.

Additionally, Newman Smith High School students Anna Halepaska, Santiago Mazuera, Taelor Opplinger and Lauren Smith all received Honorable Mention for their science fair projects at the event. Halepaska, Mazuera and Smith worked as a team on a project titled SPAAM – Simple Plastic Autonomous Aerial Machine.” Opplinger had an individual project titled “Over-Expression of Pkd1 in Renal Epithelial Cells Disrupts Tubulogenessis.”
