RLT Wrestler is State Champion

On Feb. 23, R. L. Turner Lion wrestlers Heiley Garcia and Enya Hernandez competed in the state championship in Austin, TX. Hernandez placed 4th state wide, and Garcia took 1st as the state champion.

CHS Academic Decathlon Team Ranked #13 in State

 The Creekview High School Academic Decathlon team competed in San Antonio at the state meet. CHS Mustang Jacob Crocker took 2nd place in the speech category. The Mustangs placed 13th overall in the state.

Trojan Track & Field Runners Make 1st Place Finishes at Frisco Relay

The Newman Smith High School Track and Field teams competed in the Frisco Relays on Feb. 23, with Mia James and Jeff Moore taking 1st place in individual races and the varsity boys’ team taking 1st in the 4×400 relay.

Twenty-six RHS Art Students Get Perfect Ratings at VASE, One Artist Advancing to State Level

Art students from Ranchview High School participated in the Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) competition in Coppell. The artists brought paintings, sculptures, drawings and photographs that they have worked on in their Ranchview art classes and were interviewed by a judge. The Wolves competed against other high school artists from across north Texas. Twenty-six RHS art students received a superior rating of 4, which is the highest score that can be achieved. A painting by artist Sung “Alex” Kim will be advancing to the State level of competition, which will be held at Bryan High School in early April.

ECHS Students to be Inducted to Phi Theta Kappa

Twenty-six students from Early College High School will be new inductees to the Phi Theta Kappa academic honor society. The induction ceremony will be held on Sun., Mar. 10, 2-4 p.m. at the Brookhaven College Performance Hall.

Creekview Powerlifter Takes 1st at Regionals, Advances to State

Creekview High School powerlifter, Courtney Duncan competed at the Regional Powerlifting Tournament, taking 1st place with a total weight of 795. Duncan will represent CHS at the state tournament in Corpus Christi on Mar. 15.

Eleven CHS Artists Place in VASE Competition, One Advances to State

Students from the Creekview High School art department participated in the Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) competition. Eleven students placed 1st or 2nd place in their division. Additionally, artist Fabiana Perez’s charcoal drawing advanced to the state level.

CHS Music Student Named as Finalist for Fine Arts Scholarship

Creekview High School student, Samantha Guu, was named one of the ten finalists for Music Theory for the 2013 O’Donnell Foundation Excellence in Fine Arts Scholarship Award. The award is facilitated by Communities Foundation of Texas. Guu, along with the other 9 finalists across the state, will be interviewed by the scholarship committee. The final four awardees to receive the $20,000 scholarship will be announced in late March.

Trojan Diver Places 4th at State

On Feb. 23, Newman Smith High School senior, Connor Shackelford, participated at the UIL State Diving Meet in Austin, TX. Shackleford took 4th place at State, with his score granting him All-American status as well as All-State status. Shackelford was the only diver in the competition to successfully execute a front 3-and-a-half dive, and the first C-FB diver to accomplish the feat in competition.

RLT Lions Take Medals at VASE Art Competition

Seven art students from R. L. Turner High School participated in the Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) at Coppell High School for region 105. The Turner Lions competed agains artists from several districts. Six of the seven Lions participating placed with a top rated score of 4 and one earned a 3. Monica Kidson received a perfect score of 4 with 60 out of 60 points. Six of the RLT artists walked away with medals.

Barbara Bush 8th Grade Girls’ Basketball Team Takes 1st Place at End of Season Tournament

The Barbara Bush Middle School’s Lady Broncos 8th grade basketball team competed in the season ending basketball tournament. They competed against all middle schools in C-FB ISD and Richardson ISD, taking 1st place.

RLT Powerlifter Qualifies for Regionals

R. L. Turner lion David Portillo competed at the Centennial Powerlifting Championship at Centennial High School on February 23. Portillo took 1st place with a total of 1345 points, qualifying him for the Regional Powerlifting Meet on Mar. 2 in Everman, TX. Portillo is currently ranked 5th regionally.

RHS Lady Wolves Track & Field Sweeps 1st Place Wins at Competition

The Ranchview High School Lady Wolves Track & Field Team competed at the Jesse Hawthorne Relays in Commerce, TX. The team placed 2nd overall with a total score of 90 points, winning 1st place in every relay entered for the meet.

NSHS Swimmers and Divers Place at Regional Championship

Newman Smith High School senior diver, Connor Shackelford posted a second “All-American” score of 389 for 11 dives at the Regional Championship in Frisco. Shackelford took 2nd place overall. Trojan Adrien Lewis was the top swimmer, grabbing 6th place in the 100 breaststroke, and breaking his own school record in the 200 IM.

The girls’ team finished 10th place out of over 30 teams at the competition, while boys’ took 12th place.

RLT’s AMAT Seniors Visit GeekBeat TV Studios

R. L. Turner High School seniors in the Academy of Media Arts and Technology (AMAT) visited the studios of GeekBeat TV to tour their facilities and watch a live taping of their show. Geek Beat is an online news program, delivering a daily news show and a weekly live show. During their visit, students were able to interact with industry professionals in video production, web design, social media and advertising. AMAT will be partnering with GeekBeat TV, providing students an opportunity to intern with the company in a wide range of roles. AMAT students will also be anchors during GeekBeat TV news.

NSHS Places at Annual Invitational

On Feb. 16, the Newman Smith Track and Field teams hosted the 5th Annual Trojan Invitational with several DFW-area schools competing. Smith took 3rd place in the Men’s 4x100m relay and placed in many other events, with individual Trojans placing high in several events:

CHS Athletes Recognized for All District Academic XC

Creekview High School sophomores Macey Everett, Sarah Ayala, and Marlon Gutierrez were recognized by the C-FB ISD Athletic Department for All District Academic Cross Country. These Mustang athletes had an average grade of a 90 or better to receive this distinction.

RHS Lady Wolves Track & Field Takes 1st in Season Opener

On Feb. 16, the Ranchview High School Lady Wolves Track & Field Team competed at the Trojan Relays, opening the 2013 season. The Lady Wolves placed 1st overall with a total score of 90 points.

NJROTC Shines at Competition

The R. L. Turner NJROTC took home a 1st place trophy from the Wylie High School JROTC competition.  Commanded by John Michael Campbell (Newman Smith High School), Hyrum Rasmussen, Christopher Johnson and Alberto Vasquez (R. L. Turner High School). The cadets took 1st place out of 21 Air Force, Army and Navy JROTC units from Kansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas and Texas.

Violinist Represents C-FB Well at TMEA Convention


Creekview senior violinist Samantha Guu, placed 8th in the State of Texas at the Texas Music Educators Association Clinic and Convention this past weekend. Samantha is a four-year All-State Orchestra student. 

Lady Trojans Softball Place 2nd at Tournament


The Newman Smith Varsity Softball team took 2nd place at the Tournament of Champions Softball Tournament held Feb. 14-16. The Tournament was hosted by Newman Smith Softball and R.L. Turner Softball, and held at the Oran Good Softball Complex in Farmers Branch. High school softball teams from across the metroplex participated in the tournament.

Student Volunteer Organization Receives Recognition from Dallas Furniture Bank

C-FB students in the Moving On Up program have been named a “Power of 10 Honoree” by the Dallas Furniture Bank. MOU is being honored for their volunteer work including unloading mattress trucks, cleaning and tagging donated furniture and organizing the warehouse.

Six CHS Students Place at Annual Japanese Speech Contest, Four Qualify for State

On Feb. 16, approximately 70 Creekview High School students participated in the 16th Annual Dallas Japanese Speech Contest at the Japanese School of Dallas located at Ted Polk Middle School. The event was sponsored by the Dallas Japanese Association, the Japan-America Society DFW and the Japanese Teachers Association of Texas. Six of the CHS Mustangs placed at the event, with 4 qualifying for the Texas State Speech Contest at Rice University in March. More than 600 high school students in the Dallas area are currently learning Japanese.

NSHS Boys Basketball Dominates the District

The Newman Smith boys’ basketball team won the District 10-4A championship with a 12-2 district record.  They will play The Colony High School in a bi-district game at Lewisville High School at 7pm on Tuesday, February 19.  Smith will be the visiting team for this game.  Ticket prices are $5 for adults and $3 for students.  Passes to be accepted are THSCA, TABC, 9-4A, and 10-4A.

RHS Boys Basketball Continues



Ranchview boys’ basketball who finished second in District 10-3A play with a 6-2 district record.  Ranchview will be visitor against Sanger High School in a bi-district game to be played at Lake Dallas High School at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, February 19.  Ticket prices are $5 for adults and $3 for students and passes to be accepted are THSCA, TABC, TGCA, 9-3A and 10-3A.

Ranchview has been invited to play in one of six games that are part of a “Play-off Preview” showcase event at Burleson Centennial High School at 1 pm on Saturday, February 16.  They will play against Franklin High School.  Tickets for the showcase are $6 for adults and $5 for students.
