National Merit Semifinalists Announced

We are proud to announce the semifinalists in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship program.

Dr. Bobby Burns, Superintendent of Schools, said, "These students represent the saying – ‘effort produces achievement’. Their hard work has paid off. Congratulations. ”

The students are among 16,000 high school seniors who will continue in the National Merit Scholarship Corporation's competition for 8,000 merit scholarship awards worth $35 million that will be offered in the spring, according to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation press release.

Students are selected based on performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. National Merit Scholarship Corporation reports that the pool of semifinalists represents less than one percent of the top high school seniors in the nation.

Approximately 15,000 semifinalists become finalists. From the group of finalists, Merit Scholarship winners are determined according to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. “Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies,” according to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation press release.

NSHS Theatre Presents Fall Show

Everyone is invited to the Newman Smith Fall production of An American Daughter by Wendy Wasserstein. Please join the Newman Smith Theatre Department at the Pat Mills Black Box Theater on September 30, October 1, 3, & 5. Show time is 7pm. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door. Newman Smith to host memorial golf tournament

Newman Smith High School and the Trojan golf program will host the Michael Ebanks Memorial Golf Tournament at 8 a.m. on Sept. 18 at Indian Creek Golf, 1650 W. Frankford Road in Carrollton.

The event will be held on the Lakes Course, in honor of former Newman Smith golfer Michael Ebanks, who was one of the 12 students that lost their life in the Texas A&M Bonfire in 1999. The boys golf teams from Newman Smith along with those from Creekview, Bishop Lynch, Little Elm, Coppell, Frisco Liberty, Hebron and Nimitz high schools are scheduled to participate.

Annual Elementary Math Competition Date Set

Mark your calendars!

The 26th Annual C-FB ISD Mathematics Competition will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2013 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Creekview High School. Students in grades 3, 4 and 5 will compete for medals, ribbons and trophies in either the Team Problem Solving or Individual Competitions.

The Math Competition T-Shirt Design Contest will once again kick off the event!  Students will be provided the contest rules and timelines for both of these events in class.

CHS Speech Team Has Strong Showing

The Creekview High School Speech Team competed at the Plano Senior High School Speech Tournament. Out of 41 schools competing, the Mustangs took 3rd place.

Help Spread Some Rumors with RLT Theater

The R. L. Turner Theater Arts Department proudly presents Neil Simon’s award winning farce, Rumors on October 10-12 at 7pm.  Rumors is Neil Simon at his farcical best. Four couples gather to celebrate a wedding anniversary of their best friend, Charley the Deputy Mayor of New York, at his apartment. Ken and Chris are the first couple to arrive and they find Charley upstairs bleeding. An attempted suicide – or is it? Ken, his lawyer, decides they must get “the story” straight before the other guests arrive. A missing wife, missing cook, a damaged car, whiplash, a recurring back spasm, and rumors galore add to the comic mayhem. As the confusions and miscommunications mount, the evening spins off into classic farcical hilarity. If you enjoy laughing out loud, this is the show for you.

Performances take place in the Jim Moen Performing Arts Center located in R. L. Turner High School located at 1600 South Josey Lane, Carrollton Texas.
