Newman Smith Student Named 2011 Gates Millennium Scholar

Lance Banks, Newman Smith High School senior, was named a 2011 Gates Millennium Scholar. This is the third consecutive year that a Newman Smith High School student has won the Gates Millennium Scholarship. Lance Banks was one of 1,000 top high school scholars worldwide that was selected for the prestigious award.

The scholarship, funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, provides scholarship funds to selected scholars to attend any U.S. accredited college or university. The scholarship is renewable based on the GMS Program guidelines.  And if a student pursues graduate studies in the fields of Computer Science, Education, Engineering, Library Science, Mathematics, Public Health or Science, the scholar will be eligible for additional GMS fellowship funding that will extend through the master and doctoral degree levels of study.
