ECHS Students “Take 10″ to Tackle Obesity and Learn Better Health Habits

“Take 10” is Brookhaven College service-learning program that launched this year. Early College High School (ECHS) is participating in Take 10, which encourages students to complete at least three 10-minute cardio sessions per day.

Addressing the issue of obesity, the program is gaining many participants. Brookhaven College employees and high school and college students, along with their families, are encouraged to participate. Pledge to “Take 10” at http://tinyurl.com/BHCtake10.

In an official start to the program, participating Early College High School students were given pedometers and exercise tracking logs at the kick-off rally in the Brookhaven College gymnasium on Jan. 11.

Take 10 is a walk, hike or run program in which participants sign an exercise pledge, exercise 30+ minutes a day across a 12-week period, and participate in a 5K run/walk event at the end of the semester. The Healthy Family Day 5K Run/Walk will take place on campus April 27, followed by an award ceremony for participants. The individuals who successfully track the most collective miles at the end of the 12-week period will be eligible to win prizes, which will encourage continued exercise and healthy choices.

In each month of the program, service-learning students will be facilitating health and nutrition workshops, weighing and monitoring students’ blood pressure and collecting exercise logs.

NSHS Diver Heading to State

The Newman Smith High School swimming and diving team participated in the regional competition, with senior Conner Shackelford named as regional runner up. His score qualified him for All-American status. Shackleford will represent C-FB at the UIL State Diving Competition in Austin on Feb. 22-23. The Trojan swimming and diving team is coached by Eric Ognibene.

Ten C-FB Wrestlers Heading Qualify for State

Wrestling teams from Creekview High School, Newman Smith High School and R. L. Turner High School competed at regionals. All participating C-FB schools had at least one UIL State Qualifier at the event.

From Turner, Enya Hernandez took 2nd place in the girls’ 102 weight class and Heiley Garcia was Regional Champion in the girls’ 138 weight class to qualify for the 5-A State Tournament. RLT wrestling is coached by Robert Evans.

At the 4-A level, from Newman Smith, Gerrot Winters took 3rd place honors in the boys’ 285 weight class. Duncan Iannucci is first year head coach at Newman Smith.

Creekview, under the direction of first year head coach Clay Goodloe, had a total of six state qualifiers:

Celebrating the 100th Day of School

C-FB ISD Superintendent, Dr. Bobby Burns, celebrated the 100th Day of School with students at McKamy Elementary. 

The students were dressed up as themselves at 100 years old.  

CHS Speech Team Sweeps Competition

The Creekview Speech Team recently competed at the Vines High School Speech tournament. Creekview won 1st place sweeps out of 32 schools in attendance. Creekview has 20 qualifications for the state meet.

RHS Choir Breaks Campus Record With Medals Won at Vocal Solo and Ensemble Competition, Two Heading to State

The Ranchview High School Choir students participated in the Vocal Solo and Ensemble Competition held at The Colony High School. Twenty RHS Wolves received superior ratings, 11 students received Excellent ratings and 2 students became State qualifiers. De’jha Payne and Helen Han will compete with all Class 1 Superior soloists from the State of Texas in Austin. The Wolves broke their campus record for the number of medals at this event.

Ladies Basketball Teams Advance

The Newman Smith High School girls’ basketball team took the District 10-4A championship, qualifying them for the playoffs. They will compete against the winner of the Feb. 12 bi-district game at Hebron High School. NSHS Girls’ Basketball is coached by Amanda Leader.

Creekview High School’s girls’ basketball team took fourth place in District 10-4A to also advance to the playoffs. The Lady Mustangs will take on Frisco Liberty in a bi-district game to be played at NSHS on Feb. 11, at 7 p.m. Ticket prices for the game will be $5 for adults and $3 for students.

Passes accepted will be 9-4A/10-4A/THSCA/TGCA/TABC. Employee cards will not be accepted for admission.

RLT Wrestlers Place in Regional Competition

The R. L. Turner wrestling team recently participated in a regional competition. Wrestler Enya Hernandez was a runner-up, while teammate Heiley Garcia took 1st place in her weight division.

CHS Mock Trial Team Advances to State

The Creekview High School Mock Trial team recently participated in the Region 10 competition, qualifying the team for the State tournament.

C-FB Students Take First in Regional Elementary Science Fair

Congratulations to Lauren Coker and Nicole Solete, third grade students at Kent Elementary, for placing first in the Elementary Regional Science Fair with their project titled, "Let it Grow."  Overall, C-FB had a great showing at the fair with nine students in grades 1-5 earning awards.
