Newman Smith Debate Team Wins SMU Debate Tournament
The Newman Smith High School Debate Team competed in a state-wide debate tournament at Southern Methodist University. NSHS took first place in the Lincoln Douglas Debate as well as International Extemporaneous Speaking. The Trojans also swept the U.S. Extemporaneous Speaking category by placing first, second and third place. With just four students competing, Newman Smith took home the First Place Sweepstakes Award.
Results from the tournament are:
Diana Pop: 1st Place, U.S. Extemporaneous Speaking
Tanya Rajan: 1st Place, International Extemporaneous
Sarah Grace Withers: 1st Place, Lincoln Douglas Debate, 2nd Place Speaker Award, 2nd Place International Extemporaneous Speaking
Sam Winstel: 3rd Place, International Extemporaneous Speaking
The Newman Smith Debate Team is coached by Robert Martin and Chris Agee.
The team will compete on Sept. 3 in Plano, TX.

District Announces Early Release Times for Exams and Staff Development
The district announces schedules for early release times for staff development and exams for 2011-2012.
The early release days for staff development are October 5, 2011 and February 8, 2012. The early release schedule for staff development days is as follows:
• Elementary Schools release at 10:40 a.m.
• High Schools release at 11:20 a.m.
• Middle Schools release at 12 noon
• Mary Grimes will release at 12:45 p.m.
• Bea Salazar will release at 10:35 a.m.
• Early College High School will not release students early on these days.
The early release days for exams are December 15 and December 16, 2011 and May 30 and 31, 2012. The early release schedule for exams is as follows:
• High Schools release at 11:30 a.m.
• Middle Schools release at 12:10 p.m.

Newman Smith Student Places Second In World Japanese Contest
Newman Smith student Amanda Kim placed second in the World Japanese Speech Contest held in Kawasaki City, Japan. Amanda represented the United States in the contest after placing first in the United States National Japanese Speech Contest, the Texas Japanese Speech Contest and Dallas Regional Speech Contest.
Twenty-two contestants from 18 countries such as Russia, Germany, France and China entered the World Japanese Speech Contest where Amanda delivered a five-minute speech in Japanese before almost 1,000 Japanese-native speakers. As a part of the contest, she also was interviewed in Japanese for five minutes.
Her Japanese teacher at Newman Smith is Kay Sanada.

Immunization Requirements
The required immunizations by grade level are listed on the C-FB website. The Dallas County Health Departtment at 2774 Valwood, Farmers Branch is offering shots for $5. They are open Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. No appointment is needed. You must take your child’s shot record with you.
