At the 4A level, Newman Smith’s Courtney Okolo took first place in both the 200m and 400m runs and earned the top seed at the state meet in both events. Her time of 53.69 in the 400m race set a new Region II-4A record. Newman Smith’s 4 X 400 relay team finished second at regionals and is also the #2 seed for the state meet. The relay team is comprised of Adriana De La Rue, Mia James, Courtney Okolo, and Timeka Sandifer with Christa Westmoreland as their alternate. Also at the 4A level, the Creekview girls finished second as a team at regionals and had several qualifiers for state including Melissa Gonzalez who took first place in both the 100m and 300m hurdles and who earned the top seed at the state meet in both events. Ngozi Nweke won the discus and will go to state. Kasie Trigg finished second in high jump and is also the #2 seed at state. Creekview’s 4 X 400 relay team finished just behind Smith at the regional meet which qualified them for state as the wild card team but they are the #3 seed at state as the top three 4 X 400 relay teams out of Region II-4A were faster than the first place relay teams from the other three regions. Creekview’s 4 X 400 relay team is made up of Olivia Smith, Kasie Trigg, Samantha Gonzalez, and Melissa Gonzalez, with Elizabeth Ene as their alternate.
At the 3A level, Ranchview girls finished in second place as a team and they have several state qualifiers. Michaela Williams took first place in the triple jump and is the #1 seed for the state meet. Antonisha Stewart and Jasmine Frazier finished 2nd and 3rd in the 100m hurdles and both qualified for state. Ranchview’s 4 X 100 relay team were regional champions and are the #1 seed for state. Other members of the relay team are Janay Grant, T’Ara Howard, and Shyandrea Jackson. Ranchview also qualified two boys for the state meet. Chris Wimby finished second in the 400m race and Deron Sanders took second in the high jump with Sanders going to state tied as the #2 seed.
The state meet will be held in Austin on May 11 (all 4A events plus 3A girls’ triple jump) and May 12 (all 3A running events and 3A boys’ high jump).
