Smith Reading Initiative Sets Record

The Newman Smith (NSHS) Silent Reading Program, whereby teachers set aside 15-minute somewhere in the school week for students to read, is paying hugh dividends. According to NSHS Librarian Julie Dykes, more students than ever before are now routinely checking out books from the media center. In fact, records show that as of December 7, book checkouts have doubled over the same time period a year ago.

In 2010-11, NSHS students checked out 7.398 books prior to the end of the fall semester. For the same time period this year, students have checked out an impressive 15,265 books. Way to go Smith students!
