District Holiday; Participating In Saturday's Parade

Monday, January 17 is a district holiday in the Carrollton-Farmers Branch School District. All campuses and offices will be closed in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King’s Birthday. This year will mark the 25th anniversary of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday.

In 1994, the Congress designated the day as a national day of service.
On Saturday, January 15, many from C-FB ISD will join in 14th Annual Martin Luther King Parade which begins at 10 a.m. behind Carrollton City Hall on Jamestown. That’s one way our students and staff honor Dr. King’s legacy to service by participating in this local community parade.

Here’s the parade route so you can come and see C-FB ISD students in action: The parade will start on Jamestown Street (behind Carrollton City Hall) and travel west to Josey Lane; south on Josey Lane to Keller Springs; east on Keller Springs to Kelly Blvd.; south on Kelly Blvd. to Ted Polk Middle School at 2001 Kelly Blvd.

After the parade, there will be a program at Ted Polk Middle School, 2001 Kelly Boulevard, Carrollton. The parade is sponsored by Christ Community Connection, Inc. in partnership with the City of Carrollton.

If you come and watch the parade, here are some of the C-FB ISD schools and students who you will see:

• The Newman Smith High School Trojan Band, Cheerleaders, Troyanns and Football Team. The football team will be honored at the end of the parade for its amazing 2010 season.

• Riverchase Elementary School’s Student Council.

•The Farmers Branch Student Council is teaming up with the classes of Mrs. Reiser, Mrs. Dimas and Mrs. Mecca to honor Dr. King’s famous “I Have A Dream". The students will share their dreams and distribute pencils with messages and encourage others to dream.

• Bernice Chatman Freeman Elementary students with banners.

• The R. L. Turner High School Lionettes.

• Dan F. Long Middle School cheerleaders, AVID students, and Student Council members.

• Rosemeade Elementary School students, led by music teacher Kaleena Loard, singing or playing songs on their recorders.

• Kathryn S. McWhorter Elementary School’s Choir and parents.

• Charlie McKamy Elementary School’s Safety Patrol marching and chanting about Martin Luther King’s contributions to society.

• June R. Thompson Elementary School fifth graders and the Cougar mascot on a decorated flatbed truck.

• Creekview High School’s boys’ basketball team and students in the Bridging the Gap Mentoring program.

Did you know that C-FB ISD has a set of character values? The seven values are cooperation, integrity, pride, respect, responsibility, service and citizenship.
They were established in 1996 by a committee of parents, high school students, community members, teachers, and administrators. And, in 2008, the Board of Trustees reaffirmed them. Our students, teachers and staff participation in Saturday’s parade validates our character values.

As students learn at high levels academically and incorporate the district character values in their daily lives, they will be prepared to solve our country’s most pressing problems.
