Tour of Lights with the Turner Theater Club

R. L. Turner Theater Club will host a Farmers Branch Christmas light driving tour on Monday, December 27 from 6:30-9:30pm. 

This is an open invitation to all C-FB ISD families and community members to come out and view the beautiful lights. The tour starts on Valley View at Farmers Branch City Hall (map) and concludes at the Farmers Branch Historical Park where Santa will be waiting. 

Admission is free but donations will be accepted to help the R. L. Turner Theater Club.

Polk Middle School Spreads Holiday Cheer

Ted Polk Middle School students and staff have been spreading the holiday cheer and promoting the season of giving this November and December. This year, the Ted Polk campus created “The Panther Holiday Service Program”. It is a program created to make a difference by donating items and conducting collection drives to aid local families living in the Polk feeder school system. The Holiday Service Program includes school wide programs for our Family Christmas Adoption Program, a holiday basket project, a can food drive for Metrocrest Services, and collection for miscellaneous household supplies and toiletries. During the months of November-December, the campus raised a little over $2,500 for these initiatives.

Some of the program highlights include:

• collected over 1,500 canned food items 
• created 30 food baskets for Polk and feeder school families 
• adopted 15 families (a total of 43 kids- between the ages of 10 months to 18yrs)

Students at Davis Elementary Lend a Hand

The Student Council and Green Team at Davis Elementary collected canned food for the Metrocrest Service Center during the month of December.  The two groups took the canned goods to the Holiday Store where they helped to unload the cans.  While there, they learned about how the Metrocrest helps people in need.  Students participated in filling 256 boxes which will be given out to families who come for help during the holiday season.

C-FB ISD Earned Texas Comptroller Leadership Circle Award

C-FB ISD has earned the Texas Comptroller SILVER Leadership Circle Award.  The Comptroller of Public Accounts created the Leadership Circle program to recognize local governments across Texas that are striving to meet a high standard for financial transparency online.  In order to receive the SILVER award, an entity must meet a minimum of 12 identified criteria out of 20. Information about the program along with a list of recognized entities is available at the Comptroller’s Texas Transparency website.

C-FB Students Participate in Annual Elks Hoop Shoot Contest

Approximately 3,300 students, ages 8 – 13, participated in the annual Elks Hoop Shoot Contest from schools across Carrollton-Farmers Branch this December.  One hundred students were selected by their physical education teachers to attend the contest at Blalack Middle School on Dec. 15.  Fifty-two students shot 25 free throws each to determine the winner in each of three age brackets, further broken down by gender.  The top six winners from C-FB will move on to the Plano Contest the first week in February.  Should they not be able to attend, the second place finisher in that category will be notified so that they can represent C-FB.

Trojan Debaters Celebrate Their 3rd December Win

Newman Smith High School Debate students Sarah Grace Withers and Sam Winstel won 1st place in Public Forum Debate at the Berkner High School tournament, taking their 3rd win this December. In winning their 3rd straight tournament the students have a 20-1 win/loss record, winning 13 straight debates over the last two tournaments.

Both students were also in the Semi-finals of Extemporaneous Speaking.

Newman Smith Debate is coached by Robert Martin and Christopher Michael Agee.

NSHS Graduate to Begin Training as Surgeon

Newman Smith High School 2009 graduate, Matt McMahon has been admitted to the University of Texas San Antonio Medical School. His professional training as a career surgeon will begin in July 2013.

Turner Cross Country Reads to Elementary Students

The Cross Country team at R. L. Turner High School took some time out of their schedule to read to elementary students at Central Elementary. Some of the students used their bi-literacy in Spanish and English to reach a wide diversity of classrooms.
