Congratulations to Courtney Wilson from Thompson Elementary for her innovative teacher grant, "iPad Innovation," which was funded by the C-FB ISD Educational Foundation in 2012.

The purpose of the iPad Innovation project is to motivate students to become more innovative thinkers and learners in writing. The use of technology can help students with the physicality of writing as well as help them learn and apply powerful tools that are necessary to become innovative thinkers and writers.

METSA Students have Social Skills

Before school ended in May 2012, our Math, Engineering, Technology and Science Academy (METSA) students participated in a cross-curricular project, Social Media for Social Good, in partnership with University of Indiana and four other Indiana New Tech Schools. Teams selected global issues from the United Nations’ list of Developmental Goals, developing solutions (including social media) to bring awareness to the issues and to help solve them.

The students first presented their solutions to their home room, with the top team from each room presenting their solutions to a panel of experts from non-profit, marketing and social media in a school-wide assembly.

Two teams, Food2Fly and Ken-Ya Help, were asked by the panel to combine their efforts into one project so that they could present their work to Farmers Branch Chamber of Commerce.  During their presentation, the team also shared information with the audience as to how they can use social media in their business.

METSA team has been asked to share their findings with the members of Hispanic Chamber on Aug. 22.

Recent Ranchview graduate Shannon Lynch was awarded one of nine scholarships of $5,000 per year for four years by the Schindler Elevator Corporation. The scholarship program is open to children of Schindler Elevator employees in the United States who are juniors in high school. All participants were first screened on their PSAT scores taken in their junior year of high school. The top ranked students were then evaluated on their academic record, contributions to the school and community, self-description of activities, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies. Lynch plans to attend SMU in the fall.
